New Yard Fence

Well, after a few short days of work and at less than $1/ft, we have a new fence for the yard.   As you can see, it is a simple post and rail style fence with a casual over-under rail placement on untreated, cedar posts.  We were thinking of painting it either white or brown, but due to the rustic nature of the farm, we have decided [for now] to let the fence age to a gray patina.

As we are slowly moving towards a grass-based way of raising animals, we wanted to show the farm’s more “ranchy” persona.  The fence helps convey the more laid-back feel of a ranch.  More than that though, when driving up to the place, it helps the eye move forward along the lines of the fence and away from the ugly.  Kind of an aesthetic distraction away from the house.  The fence is also a much needed physical barrier, and will now prevent folks from driving on what we call the yard.  We have lots of visitors and the grass-line near the drive keeps creeping closer to the house.

We think the fence adds quite a bit to the feel of the place.  Almost giving the impression that we may know what we’re doing or doing something right. It’s what the place needed.  We like it.
