What a difference from last week… even from just a few days ago.
Knowing that some cool days were knocking on the door, we began to prepare… we only began. I started by putting the storm windows on the house, hoping that would ease the impending discomfort of fall weather.
The last couple of days have been wet – really wet… and chilly. Yesterday, the winds started and the temperatures dropped. Last night, here on the farm, we had wind-chills of 5.4°F and sustained winds of 52+ mph. Sustained winds are average winds observed over a two-minute period. At 5:10 pm, yesterday, we had wind gusts topping 73 mph. It was the first time since moving here 3 years ago, that we felt the house shake, due to the winds.
If that wasn’t bad enough, this morning the house was cold… VERY cold – 57°F. The winds had sucked-out the furnace’s pilot light. Carol was quick to crank-up the elect. baseboard heaters in the living room and then stoked the embers in the fireplace, rekindling the fire. I did my best to get the furnace re-lit . After [about] 15 minutes, with all heat-sources producing, we had heat again… and slowly, the interior of the house warmed. As Carol brought in some wood for the fireplace, I couldn’t help but notice that she was tracking-in snow. Yep! We got snow
It’s going to be a long winter.
