This morning Carol removed the gate that separated the ‘clean-up’ rams & bucks from all the ewes & does. Carol has had a select ram and a select billy in with her girls for the last few weeks. The clean-up crew is take care of the females the main studs didn’t. We’d rather have them bred by these guys than not bred at all. Those does that do not have babies this spring will either get sold or eaten… or both.
By mixing the males and females together in one group, we eliminate the need for 2 sets of hay feeders and waterers. Having just one pen also allows us to keep the north barn door closed and use only the east door that was previously used for the boys only. I also put up some used, 8′, steel panels by the east door, between the silo and the barn. This should help block some of those cold winter winds that blow past that side of the barn. I also opened the bottom door of the silo. I wonder if any of the sheep or goats will go into the silo during the winter. Goats seem to like being indoors when it’s cold, but sheep are another story. Last year, when it was really, really cold, we had the animals locked-up inside, for their safe keeping. The sheep loved to sleep near the doors, where it was cold. I’m guessing we might find a few sheep sleeping in the silo this winter.
