The answer always seems to be a resounding “Yes!”
Since winter has hit, and hit hard, I spend a lot of time on the internet – doing research, watching DIY videos on YouTube or answering questions from folks who feel they know less about starting a farm than Carol and I. We hear all the time, “You guys are where we wish we were.” Carol and I usually look at each other and giggle to ourselves. We refer to ourselves as newbies/green-horns. It’s hard to think of ourselves as people others would like to learn from. We make so many mistakes or think about how we should have done things differently. We often wonder what the heck we were thinking when we did what we did… when we did it. “Hindsight is 20/20,” they say. They also say, “Hell is paved with good intentions.” Whatever the case, we are not experts. But I digress.
Like I mentioned, we have time on our hands. Of late, I have been doing my best to contribute to many of the Facebook pages and groups I belong to. What seems to get the most attention, recently, is the topics of Kombucha Tea and our homemade eggnog. In fact, the latest question I commented on pertained to how folks use their extra farm-fresh eggs. This inquiry was made by Grit Magazine. I commented that we use up a lot of eggs when we make Egg Pancakes or since the Holidays are here, we use a few eggs when we make our family favorite… Home-made Eggnog. The eggnog recipe also makes a good ice-cream. After commenting, I guess I thought nothing more of it.
Outside, Carol and I worked on moving the milking stand for the goats to another area of the barn structure and turned the old stand area into a holding pen for those does waiting to be milked. I think what we did will work. Anyway, when I came back to the house, I had a few FB messages about the eggnog recipe. One of the messages was from the Senior Associate Editor of Grit Magazine. I stated that she would like to include our recipe in Grit’s upcoming Special Chicken Issue. Of course I said yes.
The week previous, when an online publication asked “What have you learned to make yourself, rather than buy at the store?“ I commented that we make Kombucha Tea. Kombucha costs pennies to make, but can cost up to $3-4 to buy. Yes! Magazine asked the question. It turns out, they too are willing to publish one of our recipes. I have to admit, I’ve only been making Kombucha for a coupe of months and the generic recipe I got… was from the gentleman who sent me my first SCOBY. In the short time I have been making Kombucha I have learned one important lesson – Lavender Green tea makes for a nasty Booch. Don’t try it?
