Winter Hay On the Racks

Well, we didn’t get the predicted rain last night, but that’s a good thing.  It gave us an extra day to get the bales off the ground.

When I drove the tractor and empty hay rack into the yard, I could see by the expression on Carol and Madison’s faces that they were hoping I would keep driving.  I did not.  Even though the hay on the ground is for feeding the goats in the winter, Carol and Madison never look forward to this part of the haying season.  The thing is… if I got help I’m going to use it.

Once in the field, I got Madison behind the wheel of the Farmall H and Carol on the hay rack.  I first gave Madison a quick refresher course on how to drive the H, I then reminded Carol how best to stack the hay bales on the hay rack.  It’s bad enough that we are handling hay the old fashioned way, we (as a group) did not want to pick up the bales and restack them because the fell off.

Long story short, both my gals did great.  Madison’s driving was rock solid – no sudden stops and she never dumped the clutch.  Some of the bales we a little loose, but Carol still was able to stack the rack 7 high.  I quick parked the hay rack in the yard and we headed into the house for some refreshing Kool-Aid.  We were all sweating pretty good.

After our cool-down, I head back out to the field.  This time alone.  I no sooner got a few bales on the new rack when I saw Madison walking towards me.  She came out to help.  It wasn’t much more than a half hour before we had this second rack full of hay.  We did good.

I wish we would have had another hay rack.  I think we could have gotten all the hay off the ground.  Oh well.  We did what we could with what we had.

We’re pretty sure we’ll be getting rain over night.
